The Running Playlist app – now on Android!
Posted by Sam in App of the week, playlist, Running Playlist on September 1, 2011
It’s been a while since I posted, and now I can tell you what kept me away from publishing my usual running playlists (or you can guess from the title of this post, either way…:)
Since I launched the running playlist iPhone app, it’s had over 120,000 uses, and I’ve gotten multiple requests for a similar android app.
It sounded like a simple task to me, but little did I know, that it would take months, and not weeks to complete. The reason was that the developer I hired for this got into some technical difficulties and decided that he’s dropping the project midway, so I was basically left hanging with some unfinished files, and ended up reading a lot(!) of android websites and documentation, learning how to program for android and finishing it up myself.
I would definitely love to hear your feedback on this app and any thoughts on how to improve it (that goes for the iPhone app as well btw).
This is the original version of the running playlist app (no pace calculator) and if I see interest in it, I’ll add more features like with the iPhone app.
The app is on the Android market now so go ahead and give it a try.
As usual, it would be great if you tell your friends about this and also let me know what you think so please comment, or contact me on facebook or twitter. I’d also appreciate it if you “like” this post on Facebook or “+1″ it if you are on Google+.
Have fun!
The Running Playlist and Pace Calculator app is on the iTunes app store!

The Running Playlist and Pace calculator is now set up on the app store!
I finally shut down the old running playlist app, but even if you got the old app and didn’t get to switch to the new app, you’ll still be able to get it for free.
I’ve also been fooling around with the app’s pricing on iTunes, so please bear with me. The price will cycle on and off free for a while. You can always buy it of course, but if you have to get it for free, just keep checking back.
Just to recap, since I launched the original app, I’ve been tweaking it and adding features, so if you get the new running playlist app, you’ll also have access to the new pace calculator and playlist recommendation engine. This new feature allows you to calculate your running pace, and recommends music that may help you go faster. This feature is new, so I’m still adding more content to it, but if you get the app now, you’ll have access to the updates later on for free.
The new running playlist app is called “Running playlist and pace calculator” in the app store, so get it now before the price goes back up again.
The Running Playlist app is free again!

Those of you who’ve been following my app might be wondering what’s going on and why there are 2 running playlist apps in the iTunes app store.
Well, due to some bureaucratic issues, I had to resubmit the app to apple under a different account, so now there are 2 running playlist apps in the store.
Here’s what I’m going to do. Since a lot of you already got the first running playlist app that launched in march, I’m going to keep the 2nd app free so you can switch over. The first app will still be fully functional, but I can’t update it anymore so if you don’t get the new app now, you won’t have access to updates in the future.
But wait, there’s more. Since I launched the original app, I’ve been tweaking it and adding features, so if you get the new running playlist app, you’ll also have access to the new pace calculator and playlist recommendation engine. This new feature allows you to calculate your running pace, and recommends music that may help you go faster. This feature is new, so I’m still adding more content to it, but if you get the app now, you’ll have access to the updates later on for free.

Update: I’ve been fooling around with the app’s pricing on iTunes, so please bear with me. The price will cycle on and off free for a while. You can always buy it of course.
The Running Playlist App is FREE!!! (For a limited time only)
Posted by Sam in App of the week, iTunes top 10, playlist, Running Playlist on May 7, 2011
In the spirit of sharing free stuff and to show my thanks to all the loyal readers of this site who keep coming back for running playlists every week, I decided to share the running playlist iphone app with the world for free for a limited time.
So for this weekend only (until Monday morning), the running playlist iphone app is absolutely free on iTunes.
I highly recommend you get it now and also tell as many people as you can about it as soon as possible, because on Monday, the price goes back up again.
I also can’t say much about it due to confidentiality and such, but there are some really cool features coming to the app very soon and if you get it now (did I mention it’s free?
) you’ll be eligible for those features when the update comes out (the timing really depends on Apple’s process, so I hope it’ll be soon….).
Anyway, I’ll keep this one short and sweet – the running playlist iphone app for free for this weekend only, get it now and tell as many people as possible to get it for free before the price goes back up again.
UPDATE: Apparently, some of you contacted me saying that you missed this promotion since you don’t go online on weekends. Based on these comments I’m extending the promotion until Wednesday, so you have today and Tuesday to still get it for free.
UPDATE 2: I’m going to be testing some new pricing options, so make sure to get this app when it’s free before the prices go up again!
It’s Finally Here! A Surprise from Running Playlist

You may have been wondering what I’ve been working on for the past few months or maybe not, but still…
Well, I can finally share this now! Running Playlist has gone mobile and I now have an iPhone app in the apple app store.
You can get it here
This app takes the music on this website into the mobile world and cuts out the PC as the middleman for all your running playlist needs.
Imagine that you’re on a run, and want to up your pace by using a high BPM song. Problem is, you don’t have a way to find high BPM songs in iTunes, and you won’t waste your time listening to lots of songs trying to find the right one…
Running Playlist to the rescue! Just like in the site, the new running playlist app has tons of songs listed by BPM to address all your running needs.
But wait, there’s more…
Not only can you find songs or entire playlists by BPM, you can also find them by event type. So if you need a playlist for a fast 5k and you realize that 10 minutes before the run starts, all you need to do is launch the app, tap the “5k” icon, and there you have it, 100′s of songs and playlists for you to choose.
Get the running playlist app here
The folks at Apple liked this app as well, and it’s now (as of yesterday) featured in the new and noteworthy section in its category.
Right now, the app is priced for the launch, but it won’t stay like this forever, so get it now…
Also, I would really appreciate if you share this with your friends, so we can get this app out to as many runners as possible. No reason for them to run with boring music, right?

Running Playlist: Music/Running/Playlist App review of the week: Cadence:
Posted by Sam in App of the week, Music, playlist, Running Playlist on August 23, 2010
I had a chance to play with the Cadence app over the weekend, and here’s my review:
What it does:
The cadence app is a very simple app. All it does is scan you music and let you find songs that match a certain BPM you are looking for. This simplicity is also its greatest strength.
It’s very easy to use and finds songs by BPM so you can run or exercise to the BPM of your choosing.
Does it work?
Well, the answer to this is yes and no.
The most important question really, is it accurate? if it’s not, then the whole thing is a waste of time.
I’ve been studying songs’ BPM for a while now, and I’m usually pretty good at figuring out the bpm by just tapping to the beat. I don’t know if this is a testament to my skill or to that of the app, but in most cases (I’d say about 70-80% of the time), it’s spot on to my manual beats.
The problem starts when it comes to slower songs, or at least that’s where I spotted it.
It has a very hard time scanning and getting bpm right on a slow song and it makes a huge mess when it does.
One very clear example was Barry Manilow’s Mandy. it showed the bpm for that to be 219. if that was the case, running to Mandy would give me a heart attack because that is a VERY high BPM. but that’s not the correct bpm for that song.
The app is also limited by the size of your music collection. a typical iphone has usually around 16gb of storage. if you use all of its features, you will have some videos, some books, and some apps which don’t leave much for a very large music collection. if your collection is at around 1000 songs, which is a pretty good size, you’ll be limited to a small amount of songs for each bpm you choose. of course, you can expand the range, but the more you expand it, the less you need the app.
Overall though, I think this app does add value to a run. I would rate it at 3 out of 5.
