Running Playlist: Playlist of the week: Christian Music: 09-17-2010

I am by no means a devout Christian, but I do definitely understand how spirituality and religion fit into running.

There have been many occasions when I was overwhelmed by the feeling of being inspired (“inspired” = “in spirit”), especially on early morning runs when the world is quiet and the sun is just coming up and shining a golden light on the world, and many others where I felt so low that I searched my spiritual reserves for strength.

During those times, music helped me get break through my barriers and get to the spiritual level I was searching for.

Below is a running playlist of some inspirational songs and while you can definitely find inspiration in songs like “eye of the tiger”, these songs offer something extra.

I started the running playlist out with an easy song to run with, i.e. low BPM, for a warm up and then started the real run.
The playlist is an hour long, and ends with a low BPM song to help you cool down.

Running Playlist: 5K Playlist of the week: 09-16-2010

Today’s 5k running playlist is fast all over.

We start out with a 141 BPM song, so make sure you warm up before you run because you’ll need it.

This 5k playlist is very rock focused, since I want to keep you pumped up and energized the whole way, but I did spice it up with some pop and even one country song.

The overall average BPM of this list is 151 and it’s 50 minutes (50:11 to be precise) long which would take you through it if your pace is 16 min/mile so it’s enough for even the slowest runner.

If you are faster, you might want to cut this running playlist down and remove some songs so you don’t miss out on the fast ending.

Running Playlist: Amazon top 10 BPM analysis: 09-15-2010

This weeks Amazon top 10 has some changes but not too much good for us runners.

First, I’m happy to announce that “California Gurls” is finally out of the top 10. It was such an annoying song, and it’s good to see that Amazon customers finally got some good taste in music back (even though Teenage Dream is still there… but I’ll take what I can get).

Come And Get It comes in at number 5. The song has a jazzy feel to it and comes in with a BPM of 117, which is not the best for a running playlist, but you could use it for recovery if you like it.

We also have a new entrant at number 10, Dog Days Are Over, but that song has a BPM of 76 which is not great for a running playlist.

I’ve bolded the songs that would be good for a running playlist.

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 09-14-2010

This week’s iTunes top 10 list has a few new entries that would make good additions to a running playlist.

Dog Days Are Over comes in at number 3, but since it has a BPM of 76, it’s not really a good jogging playlist song.

Club Can’t Handle Me comes in at number 6. Not only is it a very nice song to listen to, it also has a BPM of 129, which makes it a great song to add to a moderate intensity running playlist.

Closing the list of new additions this week, comes Only Girl (In The World), which has a BPM of 127. I’m not really a fan of this song, but it would work in a running playlist.

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that would make a good addition to a running playlist.

How to build a great running or jogging playlist

jogging playlist
Building a great running playlist can be the key to a successful run. It could be the difference between an average or bad run and a great one. I’ve had so many runs that started out poor and then became great once I put a great music playlist on.

The key to building a great running playlist depends on the type of run you are trying to do, the way you run, and the type of music you like.

In the examples below you will see how you can use playlists, the BPM of the music, and the order of the songs to help you run better, faster, and follow your training plan.

Here are some examples:

My friend Jeff likes to run 5k races. He is pretty fast, and he listens to music while he runs.
His running playlist is full of very high BPM songs. So in this case, if you are like Jeff, you’d want to build a playlist that is 30-40 minutes long in total, and that is filled with songs with a BPM of 140-180.

Let’s look at another friend of mine, Steve.

Steve is a relatively new runner, and while he wants to be fast, and win a 5k sometime in the future, he is aware that he’s just starting out and needs to pace himself so he doesn’t get hurt.

If you are like Steve, you’d build a playlist that is around 50 minutes long, with the first 5-10 minutes including songs with a BPM of around 100-120. This will allow you to ease into the run and build a good pace. If you are racing, you will most likely be somewhere in the middle of the pack and it will take you a few minutes to get into an area with enough space to run faster anyway. After the first 5-10 minutes, you can start to slowly build up BPM, go up to 140 for the next 5-10 minutes. Then after that you can go all out and increase the BPM of you songs to a high pace of 140-180.

Another great strategy is to cycle songs. This works well if you are running a longer race, and want to have time to run fast, but also run slow and recover from the faster parts of the race while you run. This is also good for speed work on a track.

Let’s say you want to run really fast for 10 minutes and then slow for 5 minutes.

Build a running playlist that follows that pattern. Put in some songs that are at around 140-180 BPM with a total time that lasts for 10 minutes, then build into the playlist some songs that are around 80-90 BPM and that last for about 5 minutes. Build this type of cycle in as many times as you need it.

Some things to think about:

1. You should probably plan to have enough music to last you for the duration of the race, unless you don’t mind looping music. If you run out of music once you’re 2 hours into a run, it can get very boring, very quickly.

2. Make sure you keep body awareness while you run. If you’re running on a very hot day for example and your 180 BPM music comes up on your iPod, you should probably skip that song unless you feel confident that you can handle that kind of heat stress.

3. When you run, make sure you’re listening to your music at a safe volume and that you make sure you are very aware of traffic and hazards on your path. I was almost clipped by a truck once because I wasn’t paying attention and listening to my music at a very high volume. One thing that really helps for this is a pair of Airdrives Earphones that go over your ears and not in them so you can still hear background noise.

Running Playlist: Playlist of the week: 09-10-2010

Running Playlist
It’s Friday again and time for another running playlist of the week.

I was a bit hard on you last week with a very brutal running playlist, so i thought I’d go easy on you and give you a more relaxed playlist this week.

This week’s list doesn’t go higher than 155 BPM and the total average BPM for the whole running playlist is 137, so you’re not going to be pushing it really hard if you run to this list. This running playlist is also slightly shorter than an hour (57:21 minutes to be exact).

So take it easy this week, and come back next week for a new running playlist.

Running Playlist: 10K Playlist of the week: 09-09-2010

running playlist

Today’s running playlist is designed to help you run a 10k. It’s timed at 1 hour 31 minutes, so it’s not for the slowest runners, but if your pace is faster than 14:40 min/mile it should be plenty for you.

I made sure that you have a good mix of low BPM and high BPM songs in this playlist so you can cycle through running fast and slowing down when you need to rest a little bit while you are out there.

Obviously, feel free to move songs around to match your running style, e.g. if you like to start very fast, then slow down a bit and then go fast again, you should move the lower BPM songs to the middle.
