It’s Finally Here! A Surprise from Running Playlist

running playlist iphone app

You may have been wondering what I’ve been working on for the past few months or maybe not, but still…

Well, I can finally share this now! Running Playlist has gone mobile and I now have an iPhone app in the apple app store.

You can get it here

This app takes the music on this website into the mobile world and cuts out the PC as the middleman for all your running playlist needs.

running playlist iphone app

Imagine that you’re on a run, and want to up your pace by using a high BPM song. Problem is, you don’t have a way to find high BPM songs in iTunes, and you won’t waste your time listening to lots of songs trying to find the right one…
Running Playlist to the rescue! Just like in the site, the new running playlist app has tons of songs listed by BPM to address all your running needs.

But wait, there’s more…

Not only can you find songs or entire playlists by BPM, you can also find them by event type. So if you need a playlist for a fast 5k and you realize that 10 minutes before the run starts, all you need to do is launch the app, tap the “5k” icon, and there you have it, 100′s of songs and playlists for you to choose.

Get the running playlist app here

The folks at Apple liked this app as well, and it’s now (as of yesterday) featured in the new and noteworthy section in its category.

Right now, the app is priced for the launch, but it won’t stay like this forever, so get it now…

Also, I would really appreciate if you share this with your friends, so we can get this app out to as many runners as possible. No reason for them to run with boring music, right? :)

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 02-23-2011

There are a lot of new songs on the iTunes top 10 list this week, and fortunately for us, a lot of them are great for a running playlist.

I’m still a bit surprised that the whole ‘Born This Wayis a knock off of Madonna’s “Express Yourself” scandal’ went away so quietly. It’s pretty obvious but I guess enough time passed that kids don’t even know who Madonna is and could think it’s a Gaga original. Oh well, I’ve go bigger things to worry about…

Glee is also starting to get annoying, it seems like they are moving more and more towards a “buy this on iTunes” show rather than a show featuring good music. One last thing, I just noticed that the new Justin Bieber song, Never Say Never, is featuring Jaden Smith, is that the same Jaden, Will Smith’s kid? Isn’t it great to have a rich and famous dad/parents? hopefully with all this practice, some talent will come as well…

I’ve bolded the songs that would make good additions to a running playlist.

And now, here’s the list:

5k Running Playlist of the week: constant BPM of 140

running playlist

This week, I thought I’d try something different on running playlist. I usually mix up my running playlist, so it has a lot of diversity and it allows me to explore different paces while I run. But I got to thinking, what would my running playlist look like if I try to keep the same exact pace for an entire run?

The results are below.

This 5k running playlist is set at a more or less constant BPM in the 140 range (I did make it vary slightly so that I get some diversity in my run). I’m going to experiment with faster and slower BPM running playlists and post my findings over the next few weeks.

This running playlist is 39 minutes long, and if you want to use it as a 5k running playlist, you’ll need to keep a pace of 12:39 min/mile.

And now, here’s the list:

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 02-09-2011: Glee Glee and more Glee

running playlist

I usually post this running playlist analysis on Tuesdays but yesterday, when I checked the iTunes top 10, I saw 3 Glee songs on the list.

“3 Glee songs?!” I thought to myself, “that’s too much… I’ll wait until tomorrow and post this once the Glee craze dies down”.

Of course, I forgot that Tuesday is Glee day on TV and coupled with the post Superbowl Glee, It created a Glee frenzy with nearly all spots on the iTunes top 10 taken by Glee songs.

Not only that, I think this is the first time in history when not only are the cover version of a song (Firework (Glee Cast Version)) and the original song (Firework) in the top 10 but the cover version also ranks higher than the original song!

Wow! anyway, I do like the Glee machine, and they are slowly becoming the main source of music for many people. It would be very interesting to see how the new american Idol does with Glee music the day before.

Anyway, back to running and music…

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 02-02-2011

running playlist

It’s groundhog day today, and about time too. I’m not sure how the groundhog thing works, but I was told that that small rodent can tell if winter is over. According to the news, he said it is, which is about time since there have just been too many snowstorms, ice storms and other types of winter nonsense keeping me from running outside.

As for the new iTunes top 10 list, not much news for those of us looking for new songs for our running playlist. There were three new songs on the list today, XX, XXX, XXXX, but they are all relatively low on the BPM side so not really good for a running playlist.

As usual, I’ve bolded the songs that are good for a running playlist.

running playlist

This week’s iTunes top 10 finally has a new entry in the #1 slot, and just any entry, it’s a new single by Britney Spears!

Just like most Britney songs, Hold It Against Me has a great beat and is sure to play on your radio for a long time.

Say what you want about Britney as a person, but she sure knows how to produce and package pop music.

Running Playlist: Top Songs For Your 2010 Running Playlist

running playlist

2010 has come and gone and just like every other media outlet, I too have a top 10 list. The songs on this list are the top 10 songs on running playlist that the thousands of visitors for this site have clicked on and reviewed.

There are more than a few obvious entries on this list, songs that were on the iTunes and Amazon top 10′s for months such as I Like It, Club Can’t Handle Me and Love The Way You Lie, but we also had a few surprises such as Only In My Dreams (a Debbie Gibson song from the 80′s) and I’ll Kill You If You Don’t Come Back by Meatloaf.

Some more interesting facts about this list are:

1. There are 2 songs on this list with a BPM of less than 120, which is usually the minimum for a good running playlist. Suprisingly, the number 1 song is one of those.

2. The most popular genre was Hip Hop

3. There are 2 songs on the top 10 list with the word “dream” in their title. Perhaps this is a subconscious choice by the readers of this site to focus on accomlishing their dreams?

4. Debbie Gibson: I’m not sure how an 80′s star came up in the top 10, but the data doesn’t lie.
