A 4th of July Running Playlist for Independence Day

The fourth of July is coming this weekend in the US (and I guess it’s coming in the rest of the world too…:) and that means that it’s Independence Day. So what better than a running playlist full of patriotic and inspiring songs to get you in the mood?
This week’s running playlist is made of songs that are about freedom, independence or … wait for it… fireworks! I made sure these are all songs with a BPM of over 120, so you can actually run to them, and also included some diversity, even though country is more dominant in this playlist than it usually is.
This running playlist averages out at 131 BPM and is 48 minutes long. So go for a run, then have a beer and watch some fireworks to celebrate the birth of the USA and I’ll see you next week!

10K Running Playlist at 140 BPM 2011-06-24

Last time we did a 130 BPM 10k running playlist and guess what’s coming this week… That’s right! a 140 BPM 10k running playlist!
Before we get to the playlist i just wanted to apologize for the issues I’ve been having with my comments system. I don’t know why, but the theme i’m using on this site seems to be disabling the comments. If apologize anyone out there who knows how to solve this, I’d really appreciate the info. So for now, I’m using a Facebook comments system that seems to be working fine.
Anyway, back to running playlists…
This list is 1:17 hours long, so it should easily last for a good 10k and averages out at 143 BPM. We’re definitely starting to get faster…

iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: Running Playlist 2011-01-06

We’re finally done with Glee, and I can go back to posting the running playlist iTunes update on Wednesdays without having to see 3 or 4 Glee songs in the list. As much as I used to like Glee, it’s starting to get ridiculous and it seems like they’re no longer making much of an effort to keep the story flowing in a semi logical way and just tie it together enough to make sure they can include as many songs as possible to sell on iTunes.
Anyway, this week’s top 10 is pretty stable compared to last week’s. There are only 2 new songs and I’m glad to see that Scotty’s song from American Idol is still on the top 10 list.

iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: Running Playlist 2011-24-05

Another week on running playlist and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is finally out! We also survived the end of the world (this time at least), so it’s good news all around. Except for the annoying “Judas”, it’s a pretty good album and I’m sure we’ll be hearing it ad-nauseum on every radio station in the country.
This week’s iTunes top 10 list has a couple of new Hip-Hop songs. I’m On One [Explicit] which I don’t like that much and is not good for a running playlist due to low BPM, and Super Bass [Explicit] which is pretty good, and is over 120 BPM, so it will work on a running playlist.

An Italian Running Playlist for the Milano Marathon

My friends from @milanomarathon asked me a while back if I could put together a running playlist for their upcoming marathon. Of course, I don’t speak any Italian, nor am I familiar with the Italian music scene, but why should that stop me from trying, right?
Turns out that finding good Italian music with a high BPM is much harder than you might think….
When I started searching for Italian music, most of the stuff I got was the kind of music you hear in the background when you go to an Olive Garden (a cheesy US Italian chain restaurant – good food though, love their minestrone soup…). Obviously, not something you’d want to run with.
But after a few hours of work, I managed to get a pretty decent list of songs. I even found some that I liked for my personal running playlist (especially the Laura Pausin songs).
This list is 41 minutes long, not a marathon playlist by any means, but enough to give you a start, and it averages at 133 BPM. As I mentioned earlier, I don’t speak or understand Italian, so if these songs are offensive or too cheesy, I apologize in advance.

It’s Finally Here! A Surprise from Running Playlist

You may have been wondering what I’ve been working on for the past few months or maybe not, but still…
Well, I can finally share this now! Running Playlist has gone mobile and I now have an iPhone app in the apple app store.

This app takes the music on this website into the mobile world and cuts out the PC as the middleman for all your running playlist needs.
Imagine that you’re on a run, and want to up your pace by using a high BPM song. Problem is, you don’t have a way to find high BPM songs in iTunes, and you won’t waste your time listening to lots of songs trying to find the right one…
Running Playlist to the rescue! Just like in the site, the new running playlist app has tons of songs listed by BPM to address all your running needs.
But wait, there’s more…
Not only can you find songs or entire playlists by BPM, you can also find them by event type. So if you need a playlist for a fast 5k and you realize that 10 minutes before the run starts, all you need to do is launch the app, tap the “5k” icon, and there you have it, 100′s of songs and playlists for you to choose.

The folks at Apple liked this app as well, and it’s now (as of yesterday) featured in the new and noteworthy section in its category.
Right now, the app is priced for the launch, but it won’t stay like this forever, so get it now…

Running Playlist: iTunes top 10 BPM analysis: 02-23-2011

There are a lot of new songs on the iTunes top 10 list this week, and fortunately for us, a lot of them are great for a running playlist.
I’m still a bit surprised that the whole ‘Born This Way
Glee is also starting to get annoying, it seems like they are moving more and more towards a “buy this on iTunes” show rather than a show featuring good music. One last thing, I just noticed that the new Justin Bieber song, Never Say Never
I’ve bolded the songs that would make good additions to a running playlist.
